Men all over Alberta are dying of embarrassment.
That’s the way Tara Adams, ATB’s Corporate Wellness manager, describes the effect that prostate cancer has on men across the province.
Currently in Alberta, one in six men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. That’s why the Man Van, with the help of ATB, is touring rural areas throughout the province visiting communities that don’t have easy access to these medical services.
“Man Van, just like ATB, serves Albertans. It’s the only program of its kind in the world and it only seemed right that we used this service because it’s right here at home,” Adams said. “It’s a perfect marriage between ATB and the Man Van program.”
This year will mark the program’s fifth year. And while the goal of the Man Van is largely the same, there is an addition this year.
The Man Van will now incorporate a “stress test” to help evaluate the mental health of those coming in to get checked. A quick questionnaire with a certified psychologist on site will help provide feedback on steps to improve mental health.
“The [stress test] is as quick as possible while providing a reasonable amount of data that can provide useful results,” said Adams. “We do have a very strong focus on mental health, so we were happy to be a partner in this mental health pilot.”
The Man Van will be making a total of 11 stops throughout its tour at the following locations:
